Media Advisory: ReTree the District to welcome spring with 200 new trees in University District

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Hundreds of volunteers will return to Buffalo’s University District for the fourth round of ReTree the District.

Community members and University at Buffalo faculty, staff and students will work together to plant 200 trees and push forward the effort to restore Buffalo’s reputation as “The City of Trees.”

When: From 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 16.

Where: The streets to the south of Main Street; from Winspear Ave. to LaSalle Ave. Volunteers will meet at 190 Kapoor Hall on the UB South Campus at 9 a.m.

Media are invited to attend. On-site contact is Darren Cotton, director of community development and planning at the University District Community Development Association, 716-857-0096.

Why: ReTree the District is a collaborative project of community partners working to plant 1,000 trees across the University District.

In less than two years, the project has planted 585 trees throughout the district, brought more than 1,000 volunteers to the community, and raised more than $20,000 to purchase trees and tools.

Among the several hundred volunteers participating in Saturday’s planting are UB students, faculty and staff from the UB Academies and Honors College, as well as participants of the university’s ‘Gettin’ Dirty’ neighborhood clean-up project.

As part of the initiative, a pilot tree stewardship program will offer free classes over the summer to students and community residents that teach the basics of tree care and maintenance.

Spring Reception at UB Anderson Gallery

On the Front Lines: Military Veterans at The Art Students League of New York is an examination of veterans’ artistic impact on The Art Students League of New York and the development of post World War II American art. With benefits from the G.I. Bill of Rights, many veterans returning from active duty received tuition credit and a monthly stipend for living expenses, which made it possible for them to attend The Art Students League of New York to learn and experiment with their artistic practices. Artists include Charles Alston, Stanley Boxer, Terence Coyle, Everett Raymond Kinstler, Jack Faragasso, Michael Goldberg, Peter Golfinopoulos, Al Held, John Hultberg, Paul Jenkins, Donald Judd, Alfred Leslie, Knox Martin, Frank O’Cain, Anthony Palumbo, Robert Rauschenberg, and William Scharf.

Chapel of Meditation is a non-denominational installation of four large works on canvas from the early 1970s by pre-eminent abstract painter Paul Jenkins (1923-2012). Employing an unorthodox approach to paint application, Jenkins is as much identified with the process of controlled paint-pouring and canvas manipulation as with the gem-like veils of transparent and translucent color which have characterized his work since the late 1950s.

Cracked Open is an exhibition of paintings by David Schirm which blends history with personal experience. Schirm’s paintings are formal yet abstracted investigations that explore the relationship between the natural and the manmade. Schirm’s personal landscapes influence his painted ones—from downtown LA to Vietnam to the countryside of Western New York, his work has continued to address social, cultural and environmental abuses. His imaginative aesthetic is showcased in a small exhibition spanning 40 years of art making.

Special Better Buffalo Fund Meeting

Up to $300,000 is available for building renovations ($50,000 per building) on targeted commercial streets in Buffalo through the Better Buffalo Fund. Learn more about the program. A non-profit organization is required to apply on behalf of property owners, so the University District Community Development Association (UDCDA) would fulfil this role.

The UDCDA would like to call a special meeting on Wednesday, March 9th at 6PM at the Gloria J Parks Community Center (3242 Main Street). The purpose of this meeting is to determine whether there is enough interest among Main Street property owners to put in an application to the Better Buffalo Fund.

Please share the meeting flyer with any property owners you think might be interested.
