This reinvestment in the urban tree canopy will produce tangible benefits like increased property values, energy conservation, and improved air quality, as well as intangible benefits like strengthening ties among neighbors and increasing the community’s capacity to create the change it wants to see.

Daytime Curfew Resolution Public Meetings

University Councilmember Wyatt has scheduled the following public meetings concerning the Daytime Curfew Resolution:

  • Monday, March 2, 2015, 5:30pm-7:00pm in the Frank E. Merriweather Library at 1324 Jefferson Avenue.
  • Monday, March 9, 2015, 6:00pm-8:30pm in the Edward Sanders Community Center at 2777 Bailey Avenue.

The resolution would create a daytime curfew for young people under the age of 17 with the hopes of keeping them in the classroom. The curfew would align with school hours.

The idea is to prevent kids from skipping class after attendance numbers show chronic absences from elementary school to high school.

The drafted ordinance would allow police to approach any minor under 17 years of age in a public space during school hours and ask where they should be.Wyatt said it would be a violation for kids not being in school. Fines will be associated for repeat offenders; how much will be determined by community input.

Fight Blight with Project Slumlord

Fight Blight!  Tomorrow Feb 24 at 2:00 in Council Chambers

Friends and neighbors,

Project Slumlord is ready to change the rental property game in Buffalo.  The committee has formulated four resolutions to address the problem of slumlords.  The resolutions have already received Common Council support.

Below is a quick summary:

  • Work Smarter!  Release all city-owned data to the NYS Open Data portal for more cooperation between city agencies in fighting blight
  • Be Proactive!  Enforce laws that are currently on the books.
  • Plan for Success!  Fund professional development for our hard working inspectors to implement Strategic Codes Enforcement
  • Clear the Backlog!  Establish a second housing court to resolve cases that have been lingering for years

You can read the full versions on Project Slumlord’s website

An Open Letter to Joe Dash

Following a meeting on February 3rd between community members, Joe Dash and his attorney, it was decided that the UHC would host a public forum about the proposed storage facility on Kenmore Avenue and solicit feedback from the community. This was done at the UHC’s February general meeting on February 10th.

For additional context on the former Dash’s Market site, please refer to the timeline and fact sheet that was made available at the meeting.

Below you will find a letter that summarizes the results of that meeting. The UHC has invited Mr. Dash to respond in advance of the Common Council Community Development Committee Meeting being held on February 24th at 1PM in Common Council Chambers to discuss the redevelopment of Dash’s Market.
