Daytime Curfew Resolution Public Meetings

University Councilmember Wyatt has scheduled the following public meetings concerning the Daytime Curfew Resolution:

  • Monday, March 2, 2015, 5:30pm-7:00pm in the Frank E. Merriweather Library at 1324 Jefferson Avenue.
  • Monday, March 9, 2015, 6:00pm-8:30pm in the Edward Sanders Community Center at 2777 Bailey Avenue.

The resolution would create a daytime curfew for young people under the age of 17 with the hopes of keeping them in the classroom. The curfew would align with school hours.

The idea is to prevent kids from skipping class after attendance numbers show chronic absences from elementary school to high school.

The drafted ordinance would allow police to approach any minor under 17 years of age in a public space during school hours and ask where they should be.Wyatt said it would be a violation for kids not being in school. Fines will be associated for repeat offenders; how much will be determined by community input.
