UHC currently has several major initiatives in 2024 to improve our neighborhoods and enrich our community.

Starin Woods Conservation and Recreation Trail
We are working with the NFTA, the City of Buffalo, and potential land trusts to preserve the 10 acres of undeveloped land located between the North Buffalo Rail Trail and Starin Avenue.

Supporting University Heights Businesses
We have organized community “cash mobs” to help boost local businesses and helped secure a grant for renovations at Parkside Candies.

Neighborhood Beautification
We are using funding from Councilmember Wyatt’s office, Erie County and the Younge Family foundations are working to maintain the green space in the University Heights. We host community volunteer days where we clean the parks, plant flowers & trees, and weed flower beds.

Preservation and Improvement of Housing Stock
We are leading the effort to register several neighborhoods in University Heights as historic districts, which will allow homeowners to apply for New York State tax credits for home improvements.

The Tool Library
Starting in 2011, The Tool Library has helped Buffalonians get access to thousands of tools for their home improvement and other projects. Since 2011, The Tool Library has grown from a small storefront helping neighbors fix up their homes to a region-wide resource center helping individuals and organizations make a significant impact in their community through the power of sharing.
In addition to the Tool Borrowing Program, The Tool Library also works to make repair more accessible through their Dare to Repair Cafes and works with partners to put their tools to work in the University Heights community through their Service Days.

Capen Garden Walk
The Samuel P. Capen Garden Walk began in 2002 with 24 gardens, in an effort to showcase the neighborhoods surrounding the University at Buffalo South campus which includes the University District of Buffalo, Eggertsville, Amherst, and Tonawanda.
2024 marks the 23nd year of the Samuel P. Capen Garden Walk, a free self-guided tour of more than 70 private gardens and carefully nurtured public spaces. The Capen Garden Walk is designed to encourage neighborhood beautification and collaboration and to build strong communities.
