Capen Garden Walk 2016 Poster Competition

It’s that time of year-holiday lights, a new year on the horizon, and a call for garden art!

The University Heights Arts Association will host a poster art competition and related exhibition in honor of the 2016 Samuel P. Capen Garden Walk. Artists are invited to submit garden-themed paintings, photographs, drawings, illustrations and mixed media for consideration.

The winning entry, which will be featured on the 2016 Capen Garden Walk poster, will receive widespread recognition. Cash prizes will be offered for the top three winners.

The top twenty finalists will be featured in the annual “Beauty in Our Backyard” exhibition held at local venues including Amy’s Place Restaurant.

The deadline for submissions is January 23, 2016. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Any person from any location can apply for this competition.

Capen Garden Walk Photo Contest

University Heights Arts Association is sponsoring a photo competition. Submit your Capen Garden Walk photos for a chance to win a prize! Participants will also be included as part of the “Capturing the Garden” exhibition that will be held in August at Amy’s Place Restaurant Buffalo Roots, Hydroponics and Organics, and Queen City Imaging as part of the UHAA Arts Crawl Partnering Program.

Submit your garden to the Capen Garden Walk

The Capen Garden Walk Committee invites you to participate in the 14th annual Samuel P. Capen Garden Walk on Saturday, July 11 by sharing your garden with visitors and showing your pride in your neighborhood. All gardens are welcome; no garden is too big or too small!

To share your garden, please submit your entry by June 20, 2015 in order to be included on the map. You will receive a confirmation email once you are registered.

All participants are invited to the pre-­event meet and greet on Friday evening, July 10 to pick up your lawn sign and maps and to meet fellow gardeners. The location and time of this event will be included in your confirmation of participation email.

Participants are encouraged to be home on July 11 to host walk attendees and greet neighbors for this community-building event. This is an excellent way to meet your neighbors!

Christine Brooks Memorial Fund

University Heights resident, long-time Capen Garden Walk Committee Member, and garden enthusiast Christine Brooks passed away in January of this year.

In Christine’s honor, the Samuel P. Capen Garden Walk Committee has decided to plant a Gingko tree in Templeton Park, which is just down the street from Christine’s house in Buffalo.  If you would like to contribute to the Christine Brooks Memorial Fund, please make checks payable to “University Heights Collaborative,” write “Christine Brooks Memorial” in the memo, and send to Samuel P. Capen Garden Walk, 2 University Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14214.

Funds collected beyond the cost of the memorial tree will be used for an annual award to help a gardener start or improve his or her garden.

Capen Garden Walk – Call for Artists!

It might be hard to think about the Capen Garden Walk with snow on the ground, but planning is well underway with a call for artists for the 2015 Garden Walk Poster. to be juried by the University Heights Arts Association.
